III. Present-day Evangelism vs Real Evangelism : Are we angling or net fishing?
The present-day mindset of evangelism can be compared to angling, while what evangelism is really about is similar to net fishing:
| Angling is solo effort | Net Fishing is an enterprise of partners. Evangelism is basically a partnership. |
| Trickery and violence is used in angling. (evangelism that utilizes entrapment, yanking the new convert out of his cultural environment into the context of a particular congregation | Net Fishing is more natural. (sharing the Good news out of a relationship of trust, based on friendship, discipling the new Christian into his own neighborhood through a small group and a sustained personal relationship) |
| Angling is treated as a sport, individuals are interested in personal trophies or glory. | Net Fishermen fishes for a living (Fishes as his way of life) |
| Angler is interested in only the catching. | Net Fisherman is also vitally concerned with the keeping. |
"The difference between fishing with a net and fishing with a hook has to do with our respect towards human beings as persons."
